Spoken English

15 Ways to improve your English Accent

Make up your mind:Your accent represents many things: your culture, memories of your motherland, your family, and others. Although you won't lose your entire culture when you try to get rid of your accent, some people may still resent you for it. Make up your mind if you really want to go through the process, and then talk to your family and friends about their feelings regarding your decision. In the end though, it's your decision to make whether to get rid of your accent or not.

Choose an accent you want to adopt: There are dozens of different accents even among native English speakers. In the United States, for example, people from different states will have different accents. Consider what accent is most advantageous for you to adopt. Ask yourself which accent facilitates smoother and relevant social interactions in your daily life. Which accent is the most useful and would likely open up good opportunities for you in the future? Many people believe that it's best to speak with a “neutral” accent, but even neutral accents are generally North American, British or Australian.

Tell you family and friends to join you: Practicing a foreign accent can be difficult because this might alienate the people around you. Instead of assuming that your family and friends don't want to have anything to do with your accent training, try to ask them to at least join you once. After all, you spend more hours with these people, and if they agree to help you, that would mean a lot. They may even have the same desire to get rid of their accent and adopt a new one to facilitate smoother social interaction with the community.

Ask for the help of a native speaker: Learning from tapes and instructional videos is good, but learning from a live native speaker is better. If you have a friend who's a native speaker of the accent you want to adopt, approach him if you encounter any difficulties in your training. List the words you find difficult to pronounce, and then have your friend pronounce them for you.

Make friends with native speakers: Obviously, you'll find the previous tip problematic if you don't have a friend who's a native speaker, which is why it's important for you to go out and make friends with native speakers. Face it: if you're surrounded by speakers of our native tongue all day, you won't absorb the accent you want very quickly. Step out of your comfort zone, and take advantage of the fact that you live near thousands of native speakers. Socialize with them and make new friends and acquaintances. This way, you'll have more opportunities to practice your accent even when you're just walking down the road on a regular day.

Talk, talk, talk! You won't achieve anything significant if you limit yourself to talking in front of a recorder or a mirror. You need to immerse yourself in actual conversations with native English speakers to get the feel of the language. Books will help, but they mostly present a structured view of language that is different from the flexible language spoken in the real world. Don't be shy, and always engage native speakers in conversations even in the early stages of your training. Remember that mistakes are part of the process to being a fluent English speaker.

Watch TV: The best way to quickly get rid of your accent is to expose yourself to as much English media as possible. Tune in to American or English-language sitcoms, movie channels, and especially news programs. Pay attention to the rhythm and intonation of the speakers, and closely observe the movement of their lips. Try to imitate the sounds they are making by saying sentences exactly how they say them. This is the same technique that a young child does to learn a language, and it works for adults too, albeit at a slower rate.

Record your progress: Language learning is largely done unconsciously, so it's hard to know whether you're progressing or not. Use a tape recorder to record your voice and evaluate how much you've improved. At the start of your training, read portions of English books or magazines aloud. After a couple of months, read the same passages again, and then listen for differences. Take note of which aspects you've improved on and what areas need more development. You can also ask a native English speaker to read the same passages, and then compare his recording to yours.

Speak slower and improve your pronunciation: A good technique to reduce your accent is to speak slowly and clearly. It's easy to forget to pay attention to your pronunciation once you learn to speak fluently. You may also develop bad pronunciation habits that are incorrect, such as pronouncing “th” as “d.” Speak slower and pronounce each word clearly to polish up your accent.

Compare English sounds with the sounds of your native accent: Different languages have different ways of producing sounds. Some alphabets are pretty much the same, but their sounds are very different. Your native language may have sounds that English doesn't use. Be careful not to accidentally produce such sounds when speaking english. For instance, the French “r” and the German “l” are pronounced differently from their English equivalents.

Examine minimal pairs: Minimal pairs are pairs of sounds that non- native English speakers often confuse, such as “bed” and “bad” or “ship” and “sheep.” Exaggerate the sounds of minimal pairs of vowels when you practice their pronunciation so you can clearly hear the difference. Vowel sounds largely distinguish one accent from another. Improve your intonation: Intonation gives feelings to your spoken words. You may send out the wrong message if your intonation is wrong. For instance, you might sound angry when you're actually happy. The best method to improve your intonation is to listen to and repeat spoken English. Accent reduction textbooks and workbooks for advanced ESL (English as Second Language) students also have written exercises that can help you understand English intonation better.

Listen to sound combinations: In normal spoken English, sounds are often blended or linked together. For instance, “Won't you?” often sounds “Wonchoo?” when spoken. This sound blending is correct, natural, and not lazy speech. Pronouncing each word clearly works, but to be fluent with your chosen English accent, you must also learn how to blend these sounds.

Clearly pronounce endings of words: Many students of English have a hard time pronouncing word endings like “s,” “ed,” and “t.” For example, “can't” becomes “can” or “girls” becomes “girl.” Take your time pronouncing these word endings, because they may greatly alter the thought of your sentences. In the case of can't, if you're not comfortable saying it, try saying “cannot” instead. You may do this until you've perfected saying the word “can't” clearly.

Use audio books and surf the Web: Audio books or tapes help a lot in teaching you how to properly pronounce words. You can borrow these tapes from the local library or purchase them. The Internet is also a great tool to help you get to know your preferred accent more. Lots of websites have videos that clearly show you how the lips move when pronouncing combinations of consonants and vowels. Try to duplicate the sounds that you hear, and you will eventually feel comfortable saying difficult words.

Practice with poetry and tongue-twisters: The English language you learn from textbooks and audio CDs is mostly very clean and structured. While this will help you in the early stages of your training, you need more advanced reference materials as you go along. Reading tongue-twisters and poems is a good trick to fast-track your accent training since these materials have more flexibility and changes in intonation.

Use a good, old dictionary: A dictionary may not exactly tell you how a word is pronounced, but it points you at the right direction on how to say a word. If you think you're not pronouncing a word correctly, just grab a dictionary and see if your pronunciation is close or not. Later, you may ask a native speaker how to pronounce that particular word just to be sure you understand what the dictionary says. In addition, there are “online dictionaries” on the Internet that have libraries of pronunciation recordings that you can listen to. Be patient: The truth is, learning a second accent or language is much harder for adults than it is for children. If you grew up in a different place and you're trying to remove your native tongue's accent, the entire process could take a very long time, even years. Don't be too hard on yourself if there seems to be no improvement after the first month. Just continue on your training routine, and give yourself a pat on the back for every English conversation you've handled well. Eventually, you'll feel more comfortable speaking with your chosen accent and on your way to fluency.

Getting rid of an accent may be difficult, but it's not impossible. Lots of people have done it before, and some of them can even switch back to their native accent if they want to. You can do the same very soon if you practice every day and keep your focus.

Tips to Learn English Quickly

Ask yourself weekly: What do I want to learn this week?
Asking yourself this question every week will help you stop and think for a moment about what is most important to you. It is easy to focus only on the current unit, grammar exercise, etc. If you take a moment to stop and set a goal for yourself every week, you will notice the progress you are making and, in turn, become more inspired by how quickly you are learning English! You will be surprised at how this feeling of success will motivate you to learn even more English.

Quickly review important new information shortly before going to bed.

Research has shown that our brains process information that is fresh in our brains while we sleep. By shortly (this means very quickly - just a glance at what you are working on at the moment) going over some exercise, reading, etc. before you go to sleep, your brain will work away on this information while you sleep!

While doing exercises and alone at home or in your room, speak English aloud.

Connect the muscles of your face to the information in your head. Just as understanding the basics of tennis does not make you a great tennis player, understanding grammar rules does not mean you can automatically speak English well. You need to practice the act of speaking often. Speaking by yourself at home and reading the exercises you are doing will help connect your brain to your facial muscles and improve pronunciation and make your knowledge active.

Do five to ten minutes of listening at least four times a week.

In the past, I decided I needed to get fit and went jogging - usually three or four miles. Well, after not having done anything for many months, those three or four miles really hurt! Needles to say, I did not go jogging for another few months!

Learning to understand spoken English well is very similar. If you decide that you going to work hard and listen for two hours, chances are that you will not do extra listening exercises any time soon. If, on the other hand, you start off slowly and listen often, it will be easier to develop the habit of listening to English on a regular basis.

Look for situations in which you must speak / read / listen to English

This is probably the most important tip. You need to use English in a "real world" situation. Learning English in a classroom is important, but putting your English knowledge into practice in real situations will improve your fluency in speaking English. If you do not know of any "real life" situation, create new ones for yourself by using the Internet to listen to news, write English responses in forums, exchange emails in English with email pals, etc.

Convert Your 1Gb Memory Card To 2Gb Free

********** May not work in all memory cards **********                                                                  Wow this is really possible when i was searching for some hacking stuff online. i saw a post where people want to try whether this crack is really working or not. But they are not aware of it so they don't want to take risk. And they didn't even mention what the application is and from where it can be downloaded and etc. So i spent half day for searching the application here and there and finally got the crack in a small forum. So i was in a confusion that will this work or not. I just cant trust it and go blindly so i scanned it in all circumstances and started to convert the card. I was shocked when i completed the process of the application. I was amazed seeing my 1 GB memory card to 2 GB and all the data can be copied according to 2GB size. So just want to give this application to all our friends.

Procedure:

1) First of all we have to make sure that its a 1 GB memory card. This only works on 1GB And it supports only in some of the rare cases of memory cards.
2) Now Backup all your data in that because we have to format the drive.
3) After backing up now open the Skimedi Fix 2GB Capacity application. i will upload a link at the end of post.
4) A small window will pop up showing the FIX and Cancel option. And you have to browse the drive where it is located (generally G: or L: drive for USB sticks)

5) After selecting the drive press on FIX and then the updating process will be followed up. It will ask your conformation whether you agree to format or not. click on yes.
6) Later it will ask to replug the device. Just replug the memory stick card and put it back. The size of the memory will be increased from 1Gb to 2Gb. you can see the properties before and after the cracking process.
7) After that you can also check the memory size in phone and also you can test the size by copying all the data to it which is around 2Gb.
8) I personally tested this and now i have converted my 1Gb to 2Gb and using 1.8 space with no problem.

9) You can reopen the Skimedi Fix and select the drive again where it shows us the size as 1912mb which is nothing but 2Gb. 10) Some times we get a parameter error while copying the files which have crossed the 1Gb size so this may not be 100% successful.

System Issues and Solutions

RegCure - Fix PC Errors(Svchost.exe Virus Guide)

On occasion you may notice that your computer is running terribly slow. Curious to discover the problem you open up the task manager, and find something similar to the following: There may just be one svchost, or several – but combined they are bogging down your computer.

Some people report a single instance of svchost which takes up 99% of their computer’s resources – meaning a dead stop for everything else.
What’s worse is that when there are multiple instances of svchost they are often competing for the same memory space, meaning none of them get to finish what they are trying to do, and neither do you! Before you take the steps to repair svchost, it’s a good idea to understand how this program works and what it does.

What is Svchost.exe Exactly?

Svchost is a shell program that is used to run many different services on your pc. These services are contained in .dll (dynamic link library) files, and run separately from other programs you may be using on your PC. The svchost file is required to run these files as there is no executable. The .dlls called by the svchost executable could be for automatic updates or other legitimate programs, or they can be used to mask less benign programs.
Since there are many different services required by your computer there could be several instances of svchost.exe running on your computer, and they could all be taking up different amounts of your computer’s memory. A problem tends to arise when one .dll can’t complete its task, which in turn bogs down the rest of the svchost programs.
Unfortunately, the svchost.exe is used as a favourite access point for viruses and other malicious programs, especially with Windows XP which has had serious issues with svchost in the past, although most of these issues have now been patched. However, if you see instances of svchost it is a good idea to run a virus scan, just to be sure that nothing has crept in.
Usually you will have a good indication that the svchost.exe is masking a virus or some other major problem when it is using 50% or more of your computer’s resources. The svchost can also become corrupted and cause problems when you install and remove programs, which shifts around the .dll files. So what do you do to fix svchost? While it’s a good idea to download a good registry scanner, you may want to do some more investigating to find the root cause of the problem before you begin.

How to Remove Svchost.exe Virus in Just Under 3 Minutes

Left unchecked, Svchost.exe problems can and do get worse. Hardware failures, errors, blue screen crashes, and complete system failure can occur. Manually repairing svchost.exe process is long and potentially hazardous to your PC, NOT RECOMMEDED.
Do these simple steps outlined below using RegCure and your computer will run fast and smooth. Get a full professionally optimized PC in just under 3 mins using Regcure.
RegCure is a tool I use myself and whole heartedly recommend. Google voice video chat cant detect my webcam

Solution1

1. Close your browsers
2. Check where the plugin is installed: run regedit and go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Talk Plugin key. Look for
string value "install_dir" - there you'll find a path to the plugin's
install path. Write it down! :)
3. Uninstall the plugin from Control Panel
3. Go to your install path
4. Delete uninstalled files: probably not everything was unistalled -
in my case a log file packed with bz2 extension was left and a
"googletalkplugin_port" file(!) - DELETE THEM!
5. Get a fresh copy (just in case :)) of Google video chat plugin
setup
6. Install the plugin once again
In my case it helped! :) Previously I have also reinstalled the
plugin
and even my browser many times and it didn't help. But deleting these
files helped. I hope after a system restart my video chat in google
will still be working! :)
Cheers!

Solution2

Hi,
If you are experiencing this issue, please try the following
workaround:
1) Exit Gmail.
2) Go to Start -> Run, and enter this command: "%USERPROFILE%\Local
Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Talk Plugin" (note: this is
for XP, the path may be slightly different on Vista)
3) An Explorer window will open. Delete the file
"googletalkplugin_port".
4) Log back into Gmail.

Windows cannot find Explorer.exe

If your system was infected by the regsvr.exe or commonly known as newfolder.exe virus and if you have successfully removed the virus from your system, but still you may be getting this annoying error message during startup telling “Windows cannot find regsvr.exe” as shown below. You may face similar problems like “Windows cannot find explorer.exe” etc. This is because the virus had assigned a registry value to execute itself during the startup. As you have removed the virus, the system can no longer find this virus file and hence the error message.

Removing regsvr.exe startup
This problem has a very easy solution. Just follow the steps below:
Step 1: Press Start+R and type regedit. It will open registry editor. But if you get an error like Registry editor has been disabled by the administrator then you need to enable the registry editor. To enable registry editor click: How to enable Registry Editor (REGEDIT).
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Step 2: Now after opening the registry editor, follow the registry path as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
This path is also shown in the images below:
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Step 3: After opening Winlogon look for Shell in the right pane of the registry editor as shown.
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Step 4: Double Click the Shell registry value. You can find “Explorer.exe regsvr.exe” in the Value data field.
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Step 5: Delete regsvr.exe alone and click OK.
Removing regsvr.exe startup
Step 6: Now the registry has been changed. Closed all programs and restart.
Removing regsvr.exe startup
After restart you can find that the message is no longer shown.

Windows cannot find Regsvr.exe

As you might have seen, whenever you face a virus attack the first thing it does is to disable the registry editor, task manager, folder options etc. In order to enable the last two you need to enable the registry editor first. Here I have given a simple solution for enabling the registry editor such that even a naïve will be able follow.
To open your Registry Editor press “Start Button + R” or go to Start menu and click RUN. Then type regedit in the run command and press Enter. If your Registry Editor opens then it has not been disabled.

Here is how it looks like when your Registry Editor has been disabled.

Follow the steps given below to enable your Registry Editor:
Step 1: Open notepad or any other text editor. Copy and paste the following code in the box to the notepad or you can download the regedit enabler file from the link below:

'VBS file to Enable Registry Editor'
On Error Resume Next
Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshShell.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools"
WshShell.RegDelete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools"
Message = "Your Registry Editor is Successfully Enabled. Please Visit www.techrena.blogspot.com for more help"
X = MsgBox(Message, vbOKOnly, "Done")
Set WshShell = Nothing
Set fso = Nothing

Or
Download regedit_enabler.zip Here Extract it and skip Step 2
Size: 540 Bytes

Step 2: Now to save the file press “CTRL + S”. It will show a window for selecting the location and format of the file you want to save. In the “Save As Type:” List select All Files. Type your desired file name and add .vbs at the end of the file name. In my example, I have kept the file name as regeditenable.vbs. after typing your file name click Save.

Step 3: Now go to the location where you have saved the file. Open the file. In my example I have saved the file in my desktop.

Step 4: You will get a message box telling your Registry Editor has been enabled. Click OK.

Now you must have access to your registry editor. Go to RUN and type regedit.

After opening your Registry Editor you can now enable your Task Manager, Folder options etc. If you have any sort of problem please notify us.

Install Linux Fedora 11

Procedure: Install Linux Fedora 11 and GRUB when Windows 7 was installed first

Installing other operating systems on your Windows 7 computer may invalidate your warrantee.
It's very important to follow the instructions exactly as stated and that includes any restarts!

Requirements.
  • Installation CD/DVD for Linux and preferably Win7's DVD.
  • 1 download.
  • A first hard disk that uses only NTFS and contains a working Windows 7.

A. Make your preparations.
  1. Backup important data before making any changes to a partition. You can burn files to a CD, clone an image of your hard disk, copy files to a USB flash/pen/thumb drive, or use an USB external drive (a good choice)
  2. Download Fedora 11, standard or 64-bit version from http://fedoraproject.org/. You can use the excellent free GetRight download manager to help with the large download. Create the Fedora Live DVD from the downloaded .ISO file.
  3. Optional: Download NeoSmart's free Windows 7 System Recovery Disk if your Win7 DVD is missing!
  4. Disconnect all external devices before you start.

B. Make free space (Unallocated) for Linux.
The single 160 GB disk usually used in testing initially had: System Reserved (100 MB, Primary, Hidden, NTFS), Windows 7 (150 GB, Primary, NTFS). The Windows 7 drive was shrunk leaving about 60 GB Unallocated space at the end of the disk (to the right). After repartitioning it had: System Reserved (100 MB, Primary, Hidden, NTFS), Win7 (90 GB, Primary, NTFS), Linux (60 GB, Unallocated).
  1. Restart computer correctly (close all programs/software before Restart).
  2. Open Disk Management in Windows 7 (right-click Computer, select Manage, click Disk Management).
    • Note which partition is marked Active.
    • Right-click the Win7 volume, and click Shrink Volume.
      • In Enter the amount of space to shrink in MB: enter enough for Linux and its Swap file.
      • Click the Shrink button (it may take some time!).
Note that we are leaving the newly acquired free space as Unallocated.

If Shrink does not give you sufficient Unallocated space, read Shrink the Windows 7 or Windows Vista Partition for instructions on how to complete this task successfully. Then return here.
  3. Restart to Windows 7 two times.
    • Open Disk Management and check that the change made is correct.

C. Install Fedora 11
Raid/LVM was not an issue when testing so partitions were created manually during installation. Grub was installed either to the Linux EXT3 partition or to the MBR - both worked fine though the Linux partition is preferred unless you have specific reasons for overwriting the Windows boot sector and boot loader.
  1. Bootup from the Linux Fedora 11 installation CD/DVD.
Select Install or upgrade an existing system.
    • Continue with the initial screens until you're presented with the option of partitioning your hard disk
(you can skip the testing of media - it checks your CD/DVD for errors).
      • Select Create custom layout in the top drop-down list and click Next.
    • Highlight the Free space, and click the New button.
Add Partition will open. First create the Fedora partition.
      • In Mount Point:, select / (a forward slash).
      • In File System Type:, select ext3
      • In Size (MB):, enter all available space (for Fedora) except 1 GB (for the Swap File)
      • Click the OK button.
    • Highlight the remaining Free space, and click the New button.
Add Partition will open. Now create the Swap partition.
      • In Mount Point:, leave it blank.
      • In File System Type:, select swap.
      • Tick to enable Fill to maximum allowable size
      • Click the OK button
(it's fine if the Swap is made a Logical partition in an Extended partition).

Click Next when ready, or click Back to recreate partitions.
Then click Write changes to disk or Go back if unhappy with the changes.
The new partitions will be created and formatted on the disk now.
    • The next screen is vital to ensure the correct location for GRUB's installation - read Installation Notes above.
      • If you wish to overwrite the Windows boot loader, leave the default at Install boot loader on /dev/sda or /dev/hda
      • If you do not wish to overwrite the Windows boot loader, click the Change device button.
        • Select First sector of boot partition and click OK.
      • Using a boot loader password is optional.
      • Under Boot loader operating system list,
highlight the Device labelled Other and click the Edit button.
        • In Label, enter a name like Windows 7.
Leave Default Boot Target unchecked unless you want Windows 7 to be the default on bootup.
        • Click OK.
      • Click Next.
    • Deal with the software applications screen as you think fit ("Customize later" is fine).
    • Click Next and the install process will start.
  2. Fedora will reboot your computer once before installation is completed (remove the DVD).
  3. Restart computer.
Press the required key (within three seconds!) when you see Press ... key to enter the menu to access the boot menu.

carefull you don't delete the wrong one, if you do, it won't show on the boot menu and don't delete the default line
exit out of everything and restart windows

Oh and if that doesn't work, copy & paste that boot config file into the other partition(s) as well
I trust that you left the other o/s on a different partition
